Battery capacity in mAh is the number every spec sheet leads with, and it explains maybe half of real-world endurance. Two phones with identical 5,000mAh cells routinely differ by four hours of screen-on time. Here is what accounts for the gap.
Chipset efficiency does the heavy lifting
The fabrication process — measured in nanometres — tells you how efficient a chip is. A 4nm chip does meaningfully more work per unit of power than a 6nm one. This is why a flagship with a smaller battery often outlasts a budget phone with a bigger one. When comparing, look at the process node, not just the chip name.
The display is the biggest single drain
Two things matter: panel type and refresh rate. An AMOLED panel uses almost no power for true black pixels, which is why dark mode genuinely saves battery on AMOLED and does nothing on LCD. Refresh rate is the other half — a screen locked at 120Hz can cost 15–20% of your battery versus 60Hz. Adaptive refresh (LTPO) drops to 1–10Hz for static content and is the single best battery feature in modern phones.
Software matters more than people admit
Aggressive background app management, bloatware and poorly optimised skins can cost hours. This is the variable you cannot read off a spec sheet, and the main reason to read real-world reviews rather than compare numbers alone.
The number worth trusting
Standardised battery benchmarks — PCMark Battery Life especially — run an identical workload on every phone, so they isolate endurance from usage habits. A PCMark result is worth more than any mAh figure. Where we have it, we show it on the comparison page.
What about charging speed?
Fast charging has largely solved battery anxiety: 67W or higher will refill most phones in around 45 minutes. Watts are advertised at peak, though, and every phone tapers as it fills — so the honest metric is time from 20% to 100%, not the headline wattage.
Charging fast does degrade cells slightly faster than slow charging, but modern phones manage the curve well enough that most people will replace the phone long before the battery becomes the reason.
