The honest answer for most people in 2026 is between ₹18,000 and ₹30,000. Below that you start losing things you notice every day. Above it, you are mostly buying camera versatility and build materials rather than speed.

Under ₹12,000

This tier has improved enormously, but compromises are real: LCD panels, slower storage (eMMC rather than UFS), and 2 years of security patches at best. Storage type matters more than people expect — eMMC makes app launches and updates feel sluggish in a way no amount of RAM fixes.

Buy here if: the phone is a backup, or for a first phone where replacement cost matters more than longevity.

₹12,000 – ₹18,000

The value sweet spot for basics. You should expect an AMOLED panel, 120Hz, UFS 2.2 storage and a genuinely usable main camera in daylight. What you still will not get: reliable low-light photography, or more than a token ultrawide.

₹18,000 – ₹30,000

This is where a phone stops having obvious weaknesses. Expect a capable chipset that will still feel quick in three years, optical image stabilisation, fast charging that fills the battery over a coffee, and 3–4 years of OS updates. For the large majority of buyers, spending beyond this band improves the spec sheet more than the experience.

₹30,000 – ₹50,000

You are now paying for camera range — a telephoto lens that is actually usable, better ultrawide sensors, and computational processing that holds up indoors. Build quality steps up too: aluminium frames, better glass, proper IP ratings.

Above ₹50,000

Flagship territory, and firmly the land of diminishing returns. The gains are real but narrow: periscope zoom, the best sustained performance under load, and the longest software support. Worth it if you photograph a lot or keep phones for five years. Not worth it because a phone is "the best".

The one rule worth following

Spend the marginal ₹3,000 on storage, not the model above. A 256GB mid-ranger will outlive a 128GB phone one tier up, because running out of space is what actually makes people replace a working phone.
