You touch the display more than any other component. It is worth understanding what the specs mean.

Panel type

AMOLED lights each pixel individually, so black pixels are genuinely off. That gives infinite contrast, better outdoor readability and lower battery use with dark interfaces. LCD uses a constant backlight — blacks look grey, and dark mode saves no power. At any price above about ₹12,000, AMOLED is the expectation.

Refresh rate — and the LTPO caveat

90Hz over 60Hz is an immediately visible improvement in scrolling smoothness. 120Hz over 90Hz is noticeable but much subtler. Beyond 120Hz, you are into diminishing returns for everything except competitive gaming.

The spec that matters more is whether refresh is adaptive. An LTPO panel varies between roughly 1Hz and 120Hz depending on content — full rate while scrolling, near-static for a photo. A fixed 120Hz panel burns power holding a rate nothing on screen needs.

Brightness: three different numbers

Manufacturers quote up to three figures, and they are not comparable:

  • Typical — what you get in normal use. Around 500 nits is fine indoors.
  • High Brightness Mode (HBM) — what auto-brightness reaches in direct sun. This is the number that determines outdoor readability. 800+ nits is good, 1,000+ is excellent.
  • Peak — a small highlight area in HDR video, briefly. Impressive on a box, largely irrelevant day to day.

When a phone advertises "3000 nits", that is peak. Look for the HBM figure.

Resolution and PPI

FHD+ (around 1080×2400) on a 6.5" phone gives roughly 400 PPI, which is past the point most people can resolve individual pixels at normal viewing distance. QHD+ is sharper and costs battery. On a phone, FHD+ is genuinely enough for most people.

Touch sampling rate

How often the screen polls for input, quoted in Hz. Higher feels marginally more responsive and matters mainly to gamers. Do not let it drive a buying decision.
